National Youth Day is celebrated on January 12, every year in India to honor the birth anniversary of “Swami Vivekananda“, one of India’s greatest leaders and believers of youth power. was an ardent disciple of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa and a major force in the revival of Hinduism in India. Celebrated as one of the greatest social leaders of the country, Swami Vivekananda was born on January 12, 1863, in Kolkata. His father, Vishwanath Datta, was a successful attorney with interests in a wide range of subjects, and his mother, Bhuvaneshwari Devi, was endowed with deep devotion, strong character and other qualities.

In November 1881, Narendra went to meet Sri Ramakrishna who was staying at the Kali Temple in Dakshineshwar. After a few years two events took place which caused Narendra considerable distress, sudden death of his father in 1884 and Sri Ramakrishna in 1886. In 1893 He decided to attend the World Parliament of Religions to spread his message which was held in Chicago. On the eve of his departure, he adopted the name of Swami Vivekananda.

His speeches at the World’s Parliament of Religions held in September 1893 made him famous as an ‘orator. For three years he spread the Vedanta philosophy and religion in America and England and then returned to India. He found the Ramakrishna Math and Mission on 1 May 1897. In 1898, he established Belur Math. His health deteriorated and Swami Vivekananda breathed his last on 4 July 1902 at the Belur Math.

National Youth Day: History
In 1984 the Government of India declared this day as National Youth Day and since 1985, the event is celebrated in India every year. Yuva Diwas is also celebrated to encourage the youth in the country to become a better person and achieve an honorable life contributing to the development of the country.

It was a decision of the Government of India taken in 1984 to celebrate the birthday of great Swami Vivekananda, i.e. 12 January, as National Youth Day every year. The Government of India quoted that ‘ the philosophy of Swamiji and the ideals for which he lived and worked could be a great source of inspiration for the Indian Youth Day.
