National Digital Library

The National Digital Library of India is a single window platform that provides learning resources with an aim to make e-learning and education accessible to all, and to bring to users of all demographics, digital repositories from India and the world. The integration platform is meant for schools, colleges, universities, teachers, students, lecturers, differently abled pupils and anyone who has a willingness to learn.

It is a National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT) project developed by the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, aided by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Govt. of India.

e- PATHSHALA

It is a single-point repository of e-resources containing NCERT textbooks and various other learning resources. It is a joint initiative of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), the Government of India, and the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), developed to showcase and disseminate all educational e-resources, including textbooks, audio, video, periodicals, and a variety of other print and non-print materials.

e-basta

eBasta is a framework to make school books accessible in digital form as e-books to be read and used on tablets and laptops. The main idea is to bring various publishers (free as well as commercial) and schools together on one platform.

Besides the portal, a back-end framework to facilitate the organization and easy management of such resources has also been made, along with the web based applications that can be installed on tablets for navigating the framework.

Diksha

DIKSHA is a unique initiative which leverages existing highly scalable and flexible digital infrastructures while keeping teachers at the center. It is built considering the whole teacher’s life cycle – from the time student teachers enroll in Teacher Education Institutes (TEIs) to after they retire as teachers. In India, many teachers are creating & using innovative tech-based solutions in their classrooms. Some state governments have also initiated programs to support their teachers digitally. This inspired MHRD and NCTE to coordinate these efforts at a national level and build DIKSHA.

States, government bodies, and even private organizations can integrate DIKSHA into their respective teacher initiatives based on their goals, needs and capabilities. They can use DIKSHA’s features to create:

  • In-class resources
  • Teacher training content
  • Assessment aids
  • Teacher profile
  • News and announcement
  • Teacher community

These features have emerged from consultations with multiple state governments, NGOs, and more than 30 public and private organisations that have collaborated on DIKSHA.

Swayam

SWAYAM is a programme initiated by the Government of India and designed to achieve the three cardinal principles of Education Policy viz., access, equity and quality. The objective of this effort is to take the best teaching learning resources to all, including the most disadvantaged. SWAYAM seeks to bridge the digital divide for students who have hitherto remained untouched by the digital revolution and have not been able to join the mainstream of the knowledge economy. In order to ensure that best quality content is produced and delivered, ten National Coordinators have been appointed. They are:

  1.   AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) for self-paced and international courses
  2.   NPTEL (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning) for Engineering
  3.   UGC (University Grants Commission) for non technical post-graduation education
  4.   CEC (Consortium for Educational Communication) for under-graduate education
  5.   NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) for school education
  6.   NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling) for school education
  7.   IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University) for out-of-school students
  8.   IIMB (Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore) for management studies
  9.   NITTTR (National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research) for Teacher Training programme
  10.   INI (Institutes of National Importance) for Non-Technical Courses

Courses delivered through SWAYAM are available free of cost to the learners, however learners wanting a SWAYAM certificate should register for the final proctored exams that come at a fee and attend in-person at designated centres on specified dates. Eligibility for the certificate will be announced on the course page and learners will get certificates only if this criteria is matched. Universities/colleges approving credit transfer for these courses can use the marks/certificate obtained in these courses for the same.

OLABS

The OLabs is based on the idea that lab experiments can be taught using the Internet, more efficiently and less expensively. The labs can also be made available to students with no access to physical labs or where equipment is not available owing to being scarce or costly. This helps them compete with students in better equipped schools and bridges the digital divide and geographical distances. The experiments can be accessed anytime and anywhere, overcoming the constraints on time felt when having access to the physical lab for only a short period of time.

The features include :

  1. Content aligned to NCERT/CBSE and State Board Syllabus.
  2. Physics, Chemistry, Biology Labs from Class 9 to Class 12. English and Maths lessons for Class 9 and 10.
  3. Interactive simulations, animations and lab videos.
  4. The concepts and understanding of the experiment.
  5. The ability to perform, record and learn experiments – anywhere, anytime, and individualised practice in all areas of experimentation.

The ‘learning-enabled assessment’ through OLabs facilitates in the assessment of; the procedural and manipulative skills of the experiment, the concepts and understanding of the experiment and a student’s reporting and interpreting skills.

Virtual Labs

The Virtual Labs project is an initiative of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India under the aegis of the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). This project is a consortium activity of twelve participating institutes and IIT Delhi is a coordinating institute. It is a paradigm shift in ICT-based education. For the first time, such an initiative has been taken-up in remote experimentation. Under the Virtual Labs project, over 100 Virtual Labs consisting of approximately 700+ web-enabled experiments were designed for remote operation and viewing. The intended beneficiaries of the projects are:

  • All students and Faculty Members of Science and Engineering Colleges who do not have access to good lab‐facilities and/or instruments.
  • High‐school students, whose inquisitiveness will be triggered, possibly motivating them to take up higher‐studies. Researchers in different institutes who can collaborate and share resources.
  • Different engineering colleges who can benefit from the content and related teaching resources.

NISHTHA : Educational Portal

The Department of School Education and Literacy has launched a National Mission to improve learning outcomes at the elementary level through an Integrated Teacher Training Programme called NISHTHA under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of Samagra Shiksha in 2019-20.

NISHTHA is a capacity-building programme for “Improving Quality of School Education through Integrated Teacher Training“. It aims to build competencies among all the teachers and school principals at the elementary stage. NISHTHA is the world’s largest teachers’ training programme of its kind.The basic objective of this massive training programme is to motivate and equip teachers to encourage and foster critical thinking in students. The initiative is first of its kind wherein standardized training modules are developed at the national level for all States and UTs.

What Great Teachers do Differently

The SWAYAM PRABHA is a group of 40 DTH channels devoted to telecasting of high-quality educational programmes on 24X7 basis using the GSAT-15 satellite. Every day, there will be new content for at least (4) hours which would be repeated 5 more times in a day, allowing the students to choose the time of their convenience. The channels are uplinked from BISAG-N, Gandhinagar. The contents are provided by IITs, UGC, CEC, IGNOU. The INFLIBNET Centre maintains the web portal.

National Education Policy

National Education Policy, 2020 (NEP) envisions a massive transformation in education through– “an education system rooted in Indian ethos that contributes directly to transforming India, that is Bharat, sustainably into an equitable and vibrant knowledge society, by providing high quality education to all, thereby making India a global knowledge superpower.” The NEP 2020 is founded on the five guiding pillars of Access, Equity, Quality, Affordability and Accountability. It will prepare our youth to meet the diverse national and global challenges of the present and the future.

National Curriculum Framework

As per the National Education Policy, 2020, following four NCFs will be developed: National Curriculum Framework for Early Childhood Care and Education (NCFECCE) National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE) National Curriculum Framework for Teacher Education (NCFTE) and National Curriculum Framework for Adult Education (NCFAE) In this regard, a comprehensive strategy has been worked out jointly by the Ministry of Education (MoE) and NCERT. As per this strategy, at the State level- all states/UTs will first prepare their State Curriculum Frameworks (SCFs) passing through the process of district level consultations, mobile app survey and development of position papers by the State Focus Groups in 25 areas/themes identified as per the NEP, 2020 including ECCE, Teacher Education and Adult Education. These draft SCFs will provide inputs to the development of NCFs. States/UTs and Autonomous organisation working under MoE, all will attempt this process to provide inputs for the NCFs. Recommendations of NEP, 2020 will be kept in view during the whole process.
